Spanish Hannukah Vocabulary

La Menorá

La Menorá

It’s almost time to celebrate Hanukkah, or Janucá, in Spanish on December 11th. Did you know that the Jewish culture of medieval Spain not only influenced the arts and sciences of Spain, but of Europe?  The Sephardic Jews, or los sefardiés, were a vital component of Spanish culture.

Janucá is a great way to present the geography of Spain and  the history of the Spanish Jews in simple Spanish while you reinforce the high numbers of dates and even ordinal numbers with lighting the candles.

The family gatherings, beautiful menorah lightings, and lively dreidel games make Janucá such a fun holiday to celebrate en español.  See Janucá for Students in Grades 6 to 12 to learn more.

Janucá

  • la menorá- the menorah
  • las velas- the candles
  • las luces- the lights
  • la familia- the family
  • la comida- the meal
  • las canciones- the songs
  • los juegos- the games
